    I really don't know what I'd be prepared to pay if HAD had taken over. I get the feeling that a lot of people who bid on "Eschers" will pay whatever it takes to win it, but I could be wrong.

    I agree, people that really want or collect Eschers will pay what they'll pay. I'm all for natural stones since I have some coticules, Belgian Blues, Tam O' Shanters and a Chinese 12K and an unconfirmed possible blue/green Escher as part of an antique handcrafted razor box/strop/hone. I'm very glad even though I have HAD that the Escher bug hasn't and won't bite. A 16,000 Shapton Ceramic on glass stone is only $100 and the edges if gives my razors is superb (granted, it's not a rare collectible like Eschers are, but I'm looking for what any polishing stone actually does for my shaving edges).
