Thread: eBay names list on hold

A QUESTION FOR ALL TO PONDER
IT HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION THAT THE USERNAMES FOR BIDS ON EBAY ARE NOT THE FULL USERNAME AS IT USED TO BE. THEY ARE A SHORTENED VERSION OF ONES USERNAME. I BELIEVE THAT EBAY IS DOING THIS FOR SECURITY REASONS. IN OTHER WORDS YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO IS BIDDING PLUS YOU WILL NOT KNOW IF THEY ARE MEMBERS OF SRP OR NOT.
THE QUESTION IS DO WE NEED THE LIST OF EBAY USERS FROM SRP?
I knew about the above but just didn't relate the two.....
I probably know the answer but just wanted your opinion.
Hey Guys I have been talking with Dave Wessell about the eBay names list that was posted under "Library" and then under "Help Files & Documents" and then under "General Information". He said that the above is in the OLD SRP and still needs to be moved to the NEW SRP. He said that it would be about a week or so before he moves it to the NEW SRP.
In the mean time if you want me to try to copy the list to a thread I will but I am not sure how that is going to work. The lists are quite lengthy and may take up a lot of space.
What do you think, do you want to wait or do you want me to try to copy them.Last edited by str8razor; 04-27-2008 at 05:27 PM. Reason: Need to ask a question

Here's a thought. What about adding a custom user-editable field in the profile? It shouldn't take much to add it to the template, code, and database, and that way we could update it ourselves? Then the custom bits could be saved as .diff and .sql files so that it would be simple to integrate during upgrades. Kind of take the brunt of work off the admin for the upkeep?
Other than that, I don't see having to wait for a short while for the files to be propogated into the production site as that big a deal.

Thanked: 1is it a good idea to repost it?
Since ebay has gone to such trouble to hide user names, there may be some security risk involved in publishing them, I don't know what risk.
Its point is no longer valid as ebay has made impossible to tell who your bidding against anyway.

Hi Heliguy,
You know I am really glad that you said what you said because I have noticed that eBay is doing that with their usernames and it never registered with me the relationship of that to our list of eBay names.
You are perfectly right when someone bids on something one does not have a clue who they are bidding against.
I will ponder this and discuss it with the admins and mods to see if this thread is even warranted.
Thanks again.....................if anything has been abnormal for a long enough period it then becomes normal.

Sorry I'm so late to the party but one point that might be made for the list is that ebay stll doesn't hide the sellers identity. I was just looking at a straight, and it looks really nice, and the presentation looks very familiar. Not sure if he's a srp member or not, and I'd rather deal with an srp'er when given the choice, so I thought I'd take a gander at the list. Anyway, it would be nice to know the ebay names so we can identify if a seller is one of the good guys or not.

Good point Tony. I never realized that people would check out the seller in relation to SRP. When Dave Wessell returns from San Diego next week hopefully he will put the section back that contains the list. If you shoot me the eBay name I can check to see if he/she is a member.
