I saw this happen a few times with classic fishing reels. The guys had quite a racket going. They gobbled a bunch up at low prices and then 'created' a market for them with a bunch of auctions and high bids. The reels never actually changed hands. They actually helped me by setting a high 'comparable value' for the ones that I was selling. Eventually, they sold out and the 'market' collapsed.
