    Default Second chance offer??

I haven't encountered this before (hardly ever get on ebay).

I am looking for a spike. I was kind of trying out gixen and figured I'd be outbid. I was. Apparently only by 1 bidder though. Here's the item.

STRAIGHT RAZOR KINFOLKS INCORPORATED MINT- - eBay (item 150313373224 end time Dec-03-08 15:08:31 PST)
caguill/112808-301 - Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

My bid was $87 (free shipping). I figured that was a lowball after reading about someone else's Kinfolks on here but now I see this one is a different model... Great deal? I like my Bergischer, I like the weight of my Dovo Micarta, I like my Kahnweiler square point but it feels a little light.

So now all of a sudden I have a "second chance offer". I read up on that on eBay and I guess I need to contact the seller to see if it's the same item or maybe a duplicate? I guess I have to make a go/no go decision pretty quick here.

    Thoughts?

First make sure it is a legit 2nd chance offer... send a message though the original auction to the seller and ask that they confirm though ebay....
Then only pay what you had bid before you were beat not what the non-payer bid or even less...
I had that one on my watch list too but it wasnt the model I wanted.. They are great steel though

Thanks. Appears to be legit. I got it by email and also in my messages on eBay. Note says it's legit if you get it in your ebay messages? The offer is for my max bid which apparently was outbid by $1 so it looks like there was only one other bidder that put in a max higher than mine.

I'm pretty sure that going back and looking around checking this out that I saw the exact same item, same seller, but with a different item#.

Does the item get assigned a different item# when the seller extends a second chance offer? So maybe they can process it like a buy it now item. Or is it likely that this seller has a few of these? I sent the seller a message asking just that. If it was a duplicate item and if the photobucket pics were of the exact item being offered in the second chance offer.

yeesh, then there's that paypal? 10% discount coupon. Brings my price down to $78.30 haha.

Interesting... The buyer that outbid me has made 53% of his bids with this seller. I wonder if/how often sellers use something like this to get you to your max bid? I think initial price on this was $69, one bid for $76.xx, my (max) bid for $87 and the winning bid (different buyer than the first bid) for $88.

So even if there was something maybe not quite right I could only have been jacked up $9 more than what I might have gotten it for otherwise.

Haha, on the other hand, I now have a "second chance" to decide if I want it or not. Since I didn't realize it was a different model I guess my question is deal? or no deal?

I am looking for a spike point. Is it carbon or stainless? and hopefully not too light weightwise?

Ok... so how would you compare this to a brand new Dovo Ebony Spike Point for about $20 more?

    Opinions please.

Happens a bit. It's called 'shill bidding'. Some times a seller has 2 accounts and forces his price up by bidding against you. It is illegal and they'll have their account cancelled if caught.
Can't complain about your price tho

I've only bought 4 things off eBay before so I don't know much about it but I started groping around. There were only 3 bidders on this item.

    Bid History
    Starting price (11/20): 69.99
    Bidder 1 (11/23): 69.99 - automatic ebay bid.
    Bidder 2 (11/30): 75.99
    Bidder 1 (11/30): 76.99 - automatic ebay bid.
    Me (11/30): 87.00 - snipe bid
    Bidder 1 (11/30): 88.00 - automatic ebay bid.

    Bidder 1 (30-day summary)
    Total bids: 43
    Total items bid on: 32
Bid activity with this seller: 53%
    Bid retractions: 0
    Bid retractions (6-months): 1

    Bidder 2 (30-day summary)
    3 total bids
    3 items
    1 item with this seller

Hard to tell... I'm thinking of offering $78 in response to the second chance offer since that would be $1 over Bidder 2.

How come Bidder 1 doesn't show a recent bid retraction? Is he still on the hook if no one accepts the second chance offer? or it doesn't get registered until the seller lists the item as sold or something like that?

    But you like the price?

sigh... life is just so hard. I had decided to go for the $78 and not go for the $87. So the guy responded with "lowest I can go is $82 to cover the postage"

Just to wrap this up (hopefully). I asked if it was centered, etc. and he said it was in mint condition so I agreed to the $82. He checked with eBay and there isn't any way for him to make a different 2nd chance offer so I'll buy it for $87 and he will refund my account the $5.

In the mean time my November paypal 10% off coupon expired. Then I went for the additional $1.50 shipping insurance...

I think last time I used eBay was over a couple of years ago. This will probably be it for another couple.

Probably a bit late but I was offered a second chance once. In this particular case, the seller had several identical items. I believe that this was originally designed to prevent re-listing in cases when the winner could not be reached, and the seller was satisfied with the final price and the second highest price. Surprisingly, when I was offered the second chance, the winner was also a person doing lots of business with the seller.... I am not sure what to think about that one... Could it be that the seller has his own sniper...?
