I played around with it a little bit this morning. It is not actually flat. Like a typical wedge it is slightly concave. The difference to my eye is that the spine on the 'flat' side is not as full so the angle is less. I am , nevertheless, going to try and put a bevel on it and see where I end up. If it doesn't work out I can always use the scales for another Puma I have that had been rescaled. I am at work so whether I get to it or not depends on how much downtime we have.

Thanked: 335Aren't Japanese razors ground like that? Flat or nearly so on one side and concave on the other. If so, the pocket microtome only has a hinged handle to differentiate it from its Eastern cousin.

When I sharpened mine Ihoned the ground side like any other straight. The other side I had to think about it for awhile and decided to set it flat and lift the spine ever so slightly till the very edge came in contact with the hone. did this very sparingly on my barber hone as to prevent a bevel from forming. You would probably be better off using a pasted strop for your honing only touching up the bevel side when needed on a stone. I you don't have a pastes strop be very delicate with the wedge side.I shaved with it the same as my duck. Inoticed no difference in feel or quality of the shave. Some far more experienced members might tell you otherwise but i cannot. One thing to remember is that the totlat width of your bevel is going to be half as wide like comparing a metal chisel to a wood one(just for visual reference).

Thanks for the info on your honing/shaving with your microtome. I haven't had the chance to fool with it. Thankfully I was busy at work the past couple of days. I am off for a couple tomorrow and the next day and I will see what I can do with mine.

Thanked: 77Did you notice any difference shaving with one side of the blade compared to shaving with the other side?

I personally don't have a very sensitive sence of touch so I do not notice a diffference. If you shave very gingerly which I don't you might or might not feel a difference. You'll have to give it a go youself to find out.
