I agree
Look very close at the blade ... it has alot of pitting on it. I've spent a small fortune on razors as of late, but I would have to pass on this one.

I did talk to phil at mase craft briefly today. he does have some larger pieces of horn. I'm not sure exactly what they'll look like but am going to order tomorrow (He was running out) and will report back under workshop when they arrive.

if you compare it to mine.. you can almost surely see he shortened his. probably had some chips in it (like mine did) and decided to shorten instead of turn it smiley like mine who knows, maybe his had a big ole crack in it.

Thanked: 0Like someone said above the starting price was 200, so not much choice as to the first bid. And if you belive that the seller paid 180 for the scales, the starting price isnt too unreasonable. Also taking into consideration the other over 8/8 wide butcher on eBay a little while back, the one that finished quite a bit over 200, the price might not be too exaggarated either for the seller or an eager buyer.
That being said, I find something off about this auction. It seems that the blade has been cleaned just enought to make it look nice and shiny and appealing but I cant shake the feeling that it was done to mislead the buyer as to the auctual worth/condition of the blade; all this is supported by the notes on the blades condition about (all of which I agree with). I also find the sentiment about paying 180 for those scales a bit far fetched, even putting aside if you like them or not (personally I dont dislike them but dont love them either), 180 simply seems too much for a set of such scales.
All in all I feel iffy about this auction. Perhaps however that is because we here expect a much better quality for the 200 than an eBay buyer would.

Well, I'm a bit disappointed that neither bidder not seller has stepped forward & identified themselves having taken great offence! I was tempted to masquerade as one or other party myself.

Thanked: 171Apparently the scales are made of oryx, which appears to be antelope horn? A quick google search shows the cost of one of the horns that looks to be enough to do more than a few razors would run between $25 and $50 shipped. I don't know anything about making scales, let alone from animal horns. These horns seem to be hollow, so I guess you'd need one that is pretty thick to start. Probably a decent amount of work to find appropriate sections and get the scales cut properly from it. $180 worth? I have no idea, I'm just trying to provide some info I found so others with more knowledge can speculate.
