Damascus and Bone?
I was jumping around various Ebay countries and found this on the German site - also on the US site I see. I can't tell what this is. Looks like bone scales and some blade I haven't seen before. Damascus steel or that new type that may or may not be any good. I'd guess if it was Damascus the starting price would be around 50 Euros. I don't see any blade or tang stamps so no way for me to know (can't read German). Anyone?

Thanked: 20you can look up the type in the workshop under the subforum "The Forge" - they have a damascene steel thread with a link to a US supplier who has the pattern names listed. here. i'd say its the "Twist 20" or "Twist 30"
Klinge is "blade".
He's saying its horn scales. A bit too good to be true if you ask me.
Härtegrad der Klinge 58 HRC = Hardness (i guess)
Klingenlänge ca. 8 cm = blade length
Klingenbreite ca. 2,4 cm = blade breadth (i.e. width) this is a hair shy of 8/8
Gesamtlänge ca. 25 cm = total length
Klingenstärke 5 mm = thickness of spine?Last edited by Ichinichi; 05-19-2009 at 08:48 PM.

I remember seeing a thread somewhere on here about fake Damascus blades that were popping up, but I don't remember what the characteristics of the fake blades were (or if they were confirmed to be fake).

Thanks all - I'm gonna pass on this one - too hard to put an edge on it from what I hear.

In case anyone else has been looking at these - I was just on the German bay site and there are quite a few of these out there for sale. I'd heard from quite a few people that these are hell to sharpen. They may be a good blade but it seems it takes a lot of effort to get them sharp. Sounds like trying to hone titanium!

The blades are forged in Pakistan or India. Nobody knows, which steel they used.
In the german forum we had a long discussion about this razors. One member bought one. This razors was not to sharpen. Two very experienced members of the german forum tried this several times without succes.
But I heard also from other persons, that managed to hone this razors. I think the conclusion of this is, that some of them will be unhoneable. Some of them are honeable, but only with a lot of work an experience.
A generally problem of the razors is, that they are with 5mm not thick enough for nearly 8/8 blade wide. The geometry here is not right. So it is absolutely necessary when you hone one of them to put several layers of tape on the back.
