I'm a little concerned about the colors of the hone. If it's surface crud, that's not a problem. If it's a sign of the binder degrading, then it might not be such a bargain.

Not sure how it compares to the swatty, but the barber hone I purchased recently was similarly uneven in color, and the binders had started to break down.
However, it was working slowly from the outside to the insided, and lapped up just fine.

good point but I've also lapped some really nasty hones and they came out fine
