Thread: Big piece of Japanese Mystery burl on ebay

I love burl and thought I would draw some attention to this one.

is there any chance of guessing what sort of tree?

Not bad - looking at the size I think quite a few scales could be extracted from it if the wood is hearty enough. Paraphrasing Michelangelo badly, all you have to do it take away the rock (in this case wood) that doesn't belong there and you get the art that's embedded. Anyone get an idea as to what the wood might be?

I'm thinking either Sugi Burl or Keyaki Burl, leaning towards Sugi based on the darker spots.
