Shell is a very specific kind of horsehide- it comes from a very narrow strip on the buttocks and is tanned a certain way I believe. Thats what I read up. Could be very wrong though. If Tony comments he'll know.

That linen side looks to be quite dirty. I wouldn't pass a razor over such a strop since the crap on top could damage the edge. Cleaning a vintage chalked linen strop back to a clean and usable condition without altering the flat uniform surface of the strop, now that's another dilemma. And one to which I have not personally found a satisfactory solution.
