Thanked: 155Hate the scales, and the blade is so badly oxidized I cannot see any real pattern. I'm sure it's not true Damascus since the art of making this steel was lost centuries ago.

Thanked: 116That would be pattern welded steel, which is quite different from real "damascus steel" (wootz). I don't know why people insist on calling pattern-welded damascus as it doesn't even remotely look like the real thing.

they are in fact quite different (and thank you for clearing up my ignorance on the subject)
it may cost more, but I'm sure you could scrounge some real Wootz up with a little work
therefore the broad sweeping statement to which I originally replied is still invalid
