Took a hit.
Spotted this gorgeous (and poorly photographed) razor on the bay a few days ago. MOP tang, dark translucent amber celluloid scales, silver bolsters, and OMG the filework on the spine was fantastic. Managed to grab it for $15 due to poor photography and some rust.Took delivery today and the razor looked even better in person. Fully restored this razor would have been one of the crown jewels in my modest but growing collection.
Rushed home and started sanding off the rust to see what I had to work with and damnitall there was a 1/4 wide crack smack in the middle of the blade hiding underneath a ton of rust. I don't fault the auctioneer because there's no way they could have known about it. Closer inspection reveals the scales are a bit warped as well, so with a heavy heart and a slightly lighter wallet, I chucked it. Oh well. Better luck next time.

We have all been there, at least it didn't cost a fortune.

I hate when that happens. Maybe you can at least save the scales though, or sell her as a display piece.

Thanked: 74You also could hack it up and turn it into a western style Japanese razor, as per this thread

There's still a collector's market that may not mind the cracked blade
And if you'll post a photo, I can slip it into the wiki razor database for posterityFind me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

It is within the realm of possibility that the seller might be understanding and refund your money less shipping if you notify him of the damage that you've discovered. Some of them are pretty good guys.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
