    Default Fancy Blade on Ebay

I know that many of you say "stay off from Ebay", but this is different.

I just found this when looking on Ebay: CUSTOM HANDMADE DAMASCUS STEEL STRAIGHT RAZOR 0501

do you think this can shave ? I'm thinking that this might be too heavy to be used upon shaving purpose.

I just wonder the purpose to make this kind of "cutlery" with western straight razor style

The seller said that it might shave but there's no guarantee, but it's a very good steel (no idea about this ) and good for collecion

comment? I'm thinking since there's actually no one buying this, there'll be no bid war hahaha maybe I just need to pay the shipping to play with this.

There is a large thread on these "damascus" razors here . It is like the old saying, "If something seems too good to be true, it is probably too good to be true."

In general, if a razor comes with a belt sheath, it's probably best to pass on it.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

if fact it is, I also wonder, what the hell is this razor...ok the blade looks nice, but the scale is insane, more likes a folder knife handle...that's why I wonder if it can really shave well...I have no idea about the blade, whether it is good or bad, but it certainly appealing, the scale will be just too heavy. I was first guessing that this might be just a razor like knife...then looking at the price, it starts really low and no one is actually bidding, I got nifty thinking to play with it, but then I decided to put it on the forum...oddly, I usually search first, maybe because I'm too excited, I just post hahaha...

Default Moved this thread to Auction talk/ebay

Gentlemen, I've moved this thread from Razors forum to the Auction talk/ebay forum since that is where it is more on topic. What with imitation being the sincerest form of flattery it seems that some of the Chinese and or Pakistan makers have decided to cash in on the popularity of the genuine Damascus razors made by bona fide custom makers.

    thanks!

the problem is that, why bother making such product...I mean, if they really want into the business, they can create a reasonable quality of product with such price, they don't even need to worry it won't sell, it will. They have the ability to mass produce that product, why not adding more steel...

As for those on the black list, it might be simply a numbers game: The number of people that go "ooo shiny oldtimey" probably exceeds the number of straightshavers. I really hate to think how many newbies give up because of those replicas.

In addition, I'm not so sure making (a good, affordable product), marketing, selling and QC would be all that simple either.

Another thing about this... the spine of the razor appears to be thinner than a single scale, a dead ringer characteristic of all the cheap Pakistani/Chinese imitation 'razors' I have seen.

Couple that with the fact that the seller gives no relevant measurements and seems to know NOTHING about razors (I.E. the sheath) and some of the English in the description is just plain worthless...

...well, I think you know my vote on this one.

I just added the following to the "Razors to avoid" in the SRP Wiki beginner's guide here.

"Recently razors of pattern welded steel have been turning up on ebay listed as "Damascus". These are listed at cheap prices and generally seem to sell at auction for prices far below what a quality Damascus (pattern welded steel) would routinely sell for whether custom or factory made. In some cases they come with a belt sheath and the seller tells the prospective buyer that the razor is not meant for shaving. In other cases they are ambiguous on the point or will say that they may be used for shaving. To date no one on the forums has posted a review but it seems safe to say that these should be avoided until further research is done on their quality and origins."
