    Default My Second Attempt

    Hello all,

This is my second attempt at getting a razor I would like to own and use off of eBay.

My first attempt in all its glory:

    http://straightrazorpalace.com/aucti...-purchase.html

    My second attempt:

JA Henckels Friodur Inox Straight Razor - eBay (item 300423846970 end time May-09-10 19:42:10 PDT)

    eBay Item #: 300423846970

The price was higher than I would have cared for, but that is the market I guess . I should have bid even later than I did to prevent another person from getting ideas. I talked a lot with this seller, and he appears to be a straight razor user himself. The razor looks great, but I want to replace the scales. If anyone has a set of Friodur scales or scale inlays, let me know.

Let me know what you think.

well if the seller is using straight razors himself that's usually a good sign.
i don't think those scales are original, you've probably seen the original ones with the friodur inlay, since you're asking for it.

the other bidder was willing to pay that much so you couldn't have done anything to get it for less. you certainly would've lost it if you had bid less. at the end of the day for me it's more important to get the razor i really want even if i end up paying more than i expect to. but the razors i want are usually far in between.

it's just part of ebay i've been on both ends of that game.

I did some research on this razor using the SRP Straight Razor Database. I believe the scales are original based on the coloring. Perhaps the inlays were not placed on this one, or they fell off over the years. The seller believed that this razor has never been used, but because of the scales, he refused to label it NOS. I think I am going to replace the scales on this one sometime. Any suggestions?

A fun note: The seller paid more for this razor than I did when he purchased it .

well, henckels is a big german company with real quality control, so i very much doubt they missed on the inlay or the stamp on the scales.
if the inlay had fallen off there would still be the imprint in the celluloid.
of course, obviously you didn't pay that much money for the scales, and you are changing them anyways, so this is more of an academic discussion.

may be you can find an old broken set of scales to salvage the inlay from, and put it on your new ones. unfortunately i can't help you with that, mine is in pretty good condition even though the scales are a bit warped, no point of cannibalizing it. you've probably seen it in the database so you know what the inlay looks like.

I was thinking of having Maximilian replace the scales. Also, I might contact Henckels to see if they can send me a set of their new scales they use on their new Friodurs. I'll have to mull it over in my head for awhile. Thanks for posting the razor on the database. I really like the database - let's me see all kinds of great razors I will probably never own.

Do you have any idea what the date of manufacture of this razor might be?

    Way fun...

It looks like all that you need to do is shave test it
and if it does not pass for you get it honed by a pro.

I would postpone getting new scales unless the
current ones are warped and risk the blade.

I say postpone because RAD is the obvious next step.
When you have three razors that you love to shave
with, pick two and negotiate spiffy new scales and
a polish for both with a "volume" discount.

And postpone because it is good looking razor now...
Reminds me of my youth.... Years ago I had an eye on
three gals and after getting well introduced I asked
the best looking and smartest one out..... A couple
years later one of the "runners up" was on TV -- yes
the Miss America pageant and yup that other gal was
still a runner up.. Hmm... was that a black and white TV
or was it broadcast B&W, I forget.

Call me "No runners up, Tom"
