Default Talk About Taking a Chance

Take a look at this auction:

Antique DUBL DUCK GOLDEDGE Straight Razor,NEW,Wrapped - eBay (item 280503264425 end time May-13-10 16:15:39 PDT)

If it is as advetised, then that will be a really nice razor. But without being able to see it, bidding on this razor would be a complete shot in the dark. This seller has no returns as well .

There are some awfully nice razors out there for $275 or less with pictures...

To be clear, I have no desire to bid on this. I am just posting it for entertainment.

Dang! The buyer is going to cry when they open up the package and find the blade rusted away from cel-rot. There's something to be said for NOS, but this seems more like a grab bag deal to me.

Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government.

I've read other people saying that waxy paper can lead to a lot of rusting on what seem to be NOS razors. The seller on eBay who sells a lot of NOS razors right now (german_money or something like that) told me he found three Pumas wrapped in that type of paper, which were totally rusted through. I asked for pictures; he wasn't kidding. They were completely rusted.
Maybe that stuff traps moisture since it's waterproof. Dunno...not a chance I'd be willing to take.

Hmm. I know its NOS, but I'd want to see it before bidding, especially with that no returns clause.

I wont even bid on an auction where they only have pictures of one side of the blade..!

No way would I buy a razor I couldn't see no matter what the brand. Talk about a "pig in a poke." Some of you may remember the Goldedge that was on ebay three or four years ago. It was also in a sealed box that had never been opened and the seller claimed to be one of the Bresnick family. He said the razor had been handed down by his uncle who had been one of the partners in Pearlduck IIRC. Without anything but the box showing it went for somewhere in the $500 neighborhood IIRC.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Always keep an escape clause on this one.
