I'm on a mac so I use one called JBidwatcher. I just set it to enter a bid for the max I'd pay 10 seconds before the auction ends in order to avoid the early price war personally.

Personally, I like eSnipe. Very reliable, and it works the same as all of the others here.
FWIW, I'm sure that the "max bid plus $5" will not work in any situation other than when the bid showing is already at or near the bidder's undisclosed maximum.
My point is simply that there is at least one person out there who is "sniping" in a way that is entirely alien to my experience, and you can see his strange bidding patterns in certain hone auctions. I was actually hoping that the person in question would chime in here, but no such luck.
