Wow, I was looking at Boker razors on eBay and found an interesting picture. Am I seeing things, or does the third picture have a straight razor with Hitler on the scales?

Actually, read the rest of the auction listing -- it looks like there's an amazing story behind this.

The razor came in a box that says "To the Admiral . . . Germany, 4 March 1945, from Johnny." In other words, it looks like the razor was a present from one American soldier (Johnny) to someone called "the Admiral" (could be his father or a brother? Maybe just a fellow soldier?). Anyway, that would mean that the razor was bought or taken by Johnny when he was fighting for this country in Germany. In other words, the razor isn't "creepy" -- it's part of a war story, except that the entire story is lost and only the razor and box are left.

I don't know about you, but this kind of thing always gets me thinking about the people who might have owned and used the razor in the past. As the seller says, if this razor could only talk . . . !

I laughed my [bleep] off when I was reading through some Chassidic laws, especially laws forbidding shaving the face with a razor. Modern inventions like electric razors were discussed and some sects gave them kosher ratings and such. Some prominent wise man was neurotic about cutting his facial hairs, even if they were long, as if they were a source of his power (like Samson only facial hair). I just laughed and laughed at the level of neuroticism and bickering and diversity regarding facial hair. I'd love to make an on-line video of myself, with as full a beard as possible, proceeding to shave my face with direct contact, not only a German-made razor but a Hitler razor, or at the least one with a swastika on it.

That said, at one Rabbi's table I encountered a few older Jewish men who were clean shaven. In the synagogue it was not impossible to find one or two. Most of the shaven were young, just too young to have good beards, but in modern times it seems to have relaxed somewhat.

Hitler/Nazi blades are uber-cool, so relax (and this is coming from a Jew).
