    Imo sides of natural hones should not be touched, lapping and rounding them may very well decrease the value because it loses it's authentic look.
    I agree. The blue/green I have is a two tone but it is harder to see because of the patina on the sides. I momentarily thought of lapping one side but if I did that would remove the saw cuts so characteristic of these hones and I wouldn't want to do that.

    I did take a nylon bristle fingernail brush and scrub it under running water to remove some of the grunge accumulated over the years but that is the furthest extent I would go to.

    The hone in the auction is attractive but the crack he mentioned is a deal breaker for me.
    Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

    I have a thuri (non escher) that is greenish grey on one side and greyish black on the other, nice stone for whoever picks it up.
