Thanked: 1371I had heard that the vintage Williams was better, but I didn't know it was that much better.
edit: It must only be the ones with the round label. There are other vintage Williams' on eBay that have labels between the round one, and the current one and they have no bids.Last edited by HNSB; 11-19-2010 at 06:02 PM.

the round label is safer for newbies than the spike label, which can really bite you if you aren't careful

Thanked: 13245Thanks for the giggle,, Lee
My understanding is that the older Williams has a higher Tallow content, but I have really no idea if that is true, and I haven't tried it myself...

Nope, what the others said. Apparently the vintage Williams was actually a fantastic soap to use. Tallow or some such. Vintage Old Spice is supposed to be really good too.
On some of the other forums, guys get really really into their soaps and vintage soaps.
PS the high tallow content in vintage soaps is probably why vintage manuals say to use soap on strops. The high tallow or other animal fat contents would have been similar to today neatsfoot or mink oils. Also why using modern soaps (which are no typically fat based) does not give the same results.

Thanked: 3795I've got a Williams puck in a box that is printed with a 19 cent price. I'd sure sell that one if I thought I could get that price for it. Oddly, this listing still has 17 hours to go so it might even go higher.

I don't know when the cutoff date for the "good" Williams was but I tried it in the early '70s when I ran out of Old Spice and didn't like it at all.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I am going to my display cases as I am sure I have some of these gold pucks! There is a Williams thread on "soaps" ! A guy actually has a NOS unopened CASE! I am sure it will be gold-plated!
