Strange contraption
I saw this weird thing on ebay:
ANTIQUE FOLDING STRAIGHT RAZOR STAMPED CAVLRY
Doesn't really look like a comfortable shaver Anyone know what this instrument really is?

Over honed ? Kidding aside, I saw a similar instrument and we had a thread going about it. IIRC it turned out to be an antique surgical tool used to cut a limb to the bone before getting to it with the saw for amputation. I believe that is what it is used for.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I saw that too, and wondered the same thing, and I love the answer. Now I gotta have it.

Thanked: 3164I have one almost exactly the same, and it came with a vintage razor made in the same manner, same scale material, same large bullseye washers, so my belief it is it was somethiing to do with personal grooming. You get modern kits with razors, scissors, scrapers, files etc, and I reckon this was an early version of that sort of kit - maybe for removing corns?
I remember seeing another one for sale that had a ribbed cover that slipped over the cutting part. Obviously it couldn't be closed with the buffer on the blade, and I wondered if it was used to clean in between the scales of the razor it came with.
Of course, it was not possible to say how hard or soft the buffer was - if it was hard maybe it could have been used in conjunction with the blade to remove corns.
Regards,
Neil
