How exactly does this happen?

I mean, i can understand a little deviation, but how exactly does it get this bad. I am completely and utterly baffled. Unless of course its intentional.

I found a Gotta 120 4/8 in a Puma case at an antique shop today that looked just like that one...Frown and all. Needless to say it's still at that antique shop...With a ridiculous price tag of $30 on it.
