Quite correct and there are people who can paint a Picasso and you couldn't tell the difference without scientific testing but I'll bet they won't sell the same as an original.

Art is subjective-a razor can be measured and compared,if they are both blacksmiths,make there own steel and create there own razors they can then be subjected to a blind test,and the we would see if they were equal in there shaving ability

No matter the product the creator of the product and the name alone is responsible for the price in many circumstances. It has little to do with intrinsic differences in the item. Think a Rolex is worth the asking price based on it's component parts?

I really think you need to reconsider this comment.

One person on ebay does not equate to the entire nation of Japan (who I assume you mean by "they"), and indeed the makers have nothing to do with one individual's greed.

Additionally, saying that members on this board could "easily" make the same razor is based on absolutely no facts. Ask some of the guys who do make razors before you speak on their behalf, and I guarantee that they'd say there's nothing "easy" about it.

And when's the last time you saw a custom razor maker make anything for less than $400, especially from a raw steel bloom?

at $4000-there ARE people who posses the talent to make a razor like the one posted,and at a lessor price.Please don't get your panties in a knot. no offence intened

Isn't Tamagahane steel usually only reserved for the most high end Katana's and such? From my understanding it is quite rare to see this used for razors. His price is high in the auction, but I think these go for around $1000-1200. Aren't there some on rasurpur's website?

Oh sweet!!! So...there's someone out there with the reputation, skill and experience of Iwasaki currently making tamahagane razors? Can you point us in the right direction? I would love a link!

So Michael Jackson's sweaty old sequined glove sold for $35000 at auction & a mint Iwasaki tamahagane razor is yet to sell for $4200 on eBay. No accounting for taste
