The boxes don't have to be paid for. You can just take them from the PO or arrange to have them bring them to your house (via your mail carrier) for no charge.

yeah I must not have been paying much attention. I would ask for a box which was kept behind the counter, the guy would give me one and ask for $5 then send me on my way. I don't recall any cash register usage but it was probably over 2 months since my last shipment

I've seen the boxes at the P.O. that you're talking about . I forget what they wanted for them , but it was something ridiculous . Especially when you find out that you can order as many priority flat rate boxes as you want , and they will deliver them to your home , for free .
