Thanked: 1936I agree 100%.
The new ones feel a tiny/little bit more grainy if you will, the older thuringians just feel more smooth. The older ones just look smoother to the eye IMO. You don't notice it as much on the stones as you will on your face. If you are planning on getting both, shave off the newer thuringian (followed by no pasted strop, just leather). It if you have done everything right, you will get a nice shave. Then take the same razor to the older thuringian, strop on leather, and shave the following day/shave. You will surely notice an improvement on the smoothness of the shave. It won't be "sharper", just smoother.Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.

Thanks shooter,
I already have the old one and have tested it a few times, its really nice to hone on.. sorta feels like im honing on silk if that makes sense lol
Anyway, i won an 8x3x5/8" one on eBay and was just curious as i wont have the new one for a few weeks. I think its the same one timbertools sell but in an 8" not a 10"

Thanked: 1936Linky isn't working on my end. I really understand the silky feeling of honing on an old thuringian. Take a razor you have honed on the old thuri and give it about 20x on the new stone (after you have lapped it of course) and shave with it. If it took away a bit of the smoothness but still gave you a smooth shave, then you know that it's in the "pre-finisher" class of stone in the neighborhood of 8K.
Just a bit of info that works well for me: When I am testing stones or razors, I never use pasted strops and only strop around 20x. This lets me feel the edge better, the more you strop, the more you can hide deficiencies in the honing. If I like what I am feeling, then I can use my normal routine on stropping as I will know that the stropping will only improve the shave. I personally use .5 micron diamond on leather (my norm is 10x) followed by plain leather...wiping the blade after the diamonds to keep from contaminating the clean leather.
Here's mine by the way:
