Any way this could be THAT old?
Hey guys, long time shaver and lurker here, I'll skip the introduction post and just say nice to finally step out of the shadows.
I wanted some opinions on the following razor on eBay:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/120774704410...#ht_500wt_1180
Do you guys think this is actually from the early to mid 1800's? There's absolutely no information that would give details either way. I'm betting it's probably not that old...Last edited by conroygc; 10-08-2011 at 05:47 AM. Reason: Fixed Link

I doubt it is 1800 years old, as the ad seems to indicate. Are you sure it's a razor?

The reason it piqued my interest is because it resembles the razors in the first couple pages of the straight razor values book that I own. According to the book, razors that looked very similar to this were the precursor to straight razors and originated from China(?). I guess what I'm wondering is if this really old, or a modern day remake of the old things.

I'm pretty sure that they are all fakes.

I would say it is fake, that thing has been floating on eBay for months and it still hasn't sold

I'm going to take a contrary view and say that I think it's a legitimate antique. The ad shows it being used to shave, but I doubt that was its purpose, but rather an invention by the seller. Not sure how it was used, but I think the purported age is quite possible. That fact that it's been for sale for some time is not relevant to its authenticity.

About a year or so these things were all over the place. Fake or not, does it have any real value?

Chinese! These come up on that auction sit a lot. Razors of this type are still in use in the far east.
