Yeah, that's pretty much how it works. All it takes is for someone in a position of authority to hype them in the forums and the price goes through the roof, whether deserving or not. I'm thinking about Fili's, DD's, Pumas and now W&B's. Once someone pays through the nose for a razor it will become collectible for them, and of course resale value goes up too.

It really wasn't that long ago that W&B's were considered pretty average, and the prices were below a hundred dollars because there were a million of them out there. Somehow they got absorbed by the hype machine, which of course drove the going price up to insane levels (especially considering the condition most of them are in; however, all someone has to do is make a half assed attempt at a restoration and they can charge even more...). On the upside, there are many lesser known Sheffield brands that are just as good at half the price, for no other reason than the fact they aren't heavily hyped. I'm sure glad I got my Wostenholm a couple years back, before the price goes up on them, too!

As for the original question, I think if you're looking for something specific it may seem like there's a lull every now and then. It just takes some patience to wait for what you want, which definitely takes a while sometimes. Good luck in your search.

I think it's the calm before the storm at the moment. I remember getting my first straight just after Christmas last year and everything was insane. I think many people get them for Xmas for one reason or another then begin collecting which has everyone searching, selling, and bidding.

It has calmed down a lot recently from what i've noticed on eBay. not much super outrageous bidding (I may be wrong, I've laid off eBay a lot lately as well)

It's like a flash back to the early '60's. I lived in Argentina for a brief time, beautiful country, but they were experiencing Hyper Inflation at the time. We can only hope that what's happening in the EBay market doesn't extend to the entire Economy. If it does, these will be the good old days!

The short answer is .... YES. There is a lull. There are more new, cheaper razor ads and less WB, Wostenholm, Rodgers, Greaves etc.
Additionally, it still is a buyers market. As a seller, I see that the more expensive (over $125) razors are not selling as well as they did
last year. It runs in cycles.

It makes sense. If the economy is down, budgets are tight.
If budgets are tight, luxury items are the first things that get cut.

That is also why investing in collectible items for the purpose of making / saving money is only beneficial as long as the economy stays healthy.

When I heard the plaintive wail of the starving collector, I was moved to ease his suffering. I have just placed 2 W&B on the bay for the hoarders to strive for.
I hope for MY sake, that you guys put on a wonderful collectors equivalent of a fight club!

I think that the market has become a little more price sensitive in recent months. Having said that, there still seems to be what I think is silly money available to buy large W&B blades.
