Thread: Active Auctions

I'd like to open a bone of contention here with alot of people and bring it up for discussion. I realize that many people especially newbees like to post active auctions and get the guys opinions of them before they bid and that part is OK but my feeling is we should not be mentioning active auctions. Now this has never happened to me but I ask all of you what if you just happened to discover some outstanding razor that went under the radar and you were about to pounce on it and someone here happens to mention it and all of a sudden your bargin evaporates in front of your eyes.

I know that every other forum I've ever seen has very strict guidelines on mentioning active auctions. Maybe we can set up guidelines where certain auctions like the really bad deals and dealers can be mentioned. Also if newbees want to ask about specific auctions maybe we can devise a p.m system with some of the more experienced guys here to give advice.

I just thought since we have this new forum topic we will probably be discussing auctions alot now and this will eventually come up so why not hash it out now and get everyones opinions about it?

In the past I have copied ebay pictures locally then attached them to the thread so I don't give away the actual ebay item.

Good point, I was about to advise members of two active auctions on the Australian eBay site, I'm not bidding but I think they would represent a good buy for someone. I'll leave it at that until there are some ground rules as I don't want to step on anyones toes.

I disagree. I think newbies should be required to post the auction number ( a real link too, not just a number), the maximum amount they are going to bid and their sniping service bid time <g>.

How else are we going to get the good deals without actually surfing ourselves!

On some of the forums you are allowed to post a link to your own auction, just not someone elses.

There was a time when I would've strenuously disagreed with you, Spendur, but I think you're right...and I'm probably more guilty of posting auctions than anyone. Now, I think I'll post afterwards. It's hard enough to get a good deal anymore as it is.

I'm not necessarily in disagreement. But would not this philosophy eliminate an experienced person from guiding new guys to a good ebay auction?

And what if the seller was one of us and nothing could be said? Would that not be taking the chance of a higher bid away from them?

Would limitations like that stifle the purpose of the dedicated forum on eBay auctions?

If someone wanted to know if they should bid on a specific razor and no one said anything because of a rule, how would we feel that the guy got stuck with a crappy razor?

Are these legitimate questions?

Ya, I agree with that. I also Agree that posting an auction can tune some into anothers potential sweet deal. But lets face it, thats life. It is rare when I am in favor of imposing restrictions of anykind, especially when the info is otherwise readily available.

I ain't been here that long, but I've been a reader, and collecting razors for a while. I have learned a great deal, a lot of which comes from questions referencing ebay auctions. It is a wonderful thing when one of the meisters points out a dudd or otherwise unmentioned flaws that might otherwise victomize a noob. I say keep it up! If I see a sweet deal on ebay, I assume at least all the members here who give a damn have seen it too. Im interest in the pair of tort. lunds mentioned on another thread...but I have to assume many others have seen it too. Obviously, I was correct. Dats de way it iz, IMO .

I agree it is a problem for people to post an active auction asking for advice. I do think it brings the item to the attention of the group when the questions are asked. I do not think it will make the bids any higher though. There are very few diamonds hiding out there on ebay anymore. People who purchase on ebay have saved searches for the Pumas, Friodurs, Dorkos, etc. Those are going to be bid up anyway. There may be some good learning experiences for newbies getting advice as to what to look for and what not to buy. Maybe just posting the pictures from ebay without divulging the auction number would be a option.
