As a seller, I block buyers with more than a certain number of bid retractions. There is an option to do this while listing. I don't like people that don't play by the rules bidding on my auctions!

I often wonder if it's a sellers "other account" bumping up the bids...there is a lot of fishy stuff that happens on the "bay".

Another reason to put in your max bid and walk away.

I also do this. I turn on all the filters. Being so selective has not hurt my ability to make sales, either.

This was from a auction that I had a bid on and these bids are all from ONE bidder. I think this is clear case of someone just bidding to see what someone else's max bid/ reserve price is, or they're running up the price for the seller, or maybe they're just being a j-hole. Just set your max bid and be done with it.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???
