Thanked: 0E-Bay "Mahe & Grosh" Toledo -The Anchor Razor
So I am bidding on this. If anyone sees any horrendous flaws, let me know. I have been chatting with the auctioneer, and the only flaws that are readily apparent seem near the heel of the blade but look superficial. I just want to make sure I'm not overlooking something terrible in the pictures (which I know aren't great). Also if you are in SF, and feel like checking this out once I receive it, I'd be interested in your opinion of its usefulness as a shaving razor before I return it or get it honed. My e-bay name is MMachado-us. I'm pretty sure this isn't a "valuation" as I'm looking for thoughts on the pics (I hope that's correct and apologize if not). Thanks for any help.

I would pass on it! And here is why~
First: POOR pictures! Unless the seller can get you better pictures of what is going on at the heal it's hard to tell if it's just superficial or a bigger issue.
Second: $20 starting bid with a reserve that is NOT met! Now it's your money but you can get a blade in much better condition AND that you won't have to send to get honed ($15-30 EXTRA) from the classifieds here or a place like whippeddog.
Third (and more of a question or more info) will this be your first straight?? If so I 100% say DO NOT get it for the reasons stated in #2
Again this MHO and YMMV but I would look elsewhere.

I had to learn most things the hard way. This was one of them. The worst was living w/ 6 mo. of terrible edges because I insisted on learning to hone at the same time I was learning the shave. There's a reason i'm called pinklather.

Thanked: 118Here is the one I bought about 6 months ago. This one appears to be in at least as good a condition as the one I purchased.
I have had mine about 6 months and did not pay much more than the starting price of the one you have indicated.
I have to admit that it it is an excellent shaver. The final decision will have to be yours.
May your lather be moist and slick, the sweep of your razor sure, and your edge always keen!

Thanked: 0Thanks for all of your opinions. I'll think about what works best for me. I e-mailed the seller and they said they would give me two weeks to return it from the date I receive it. With free shipping to get it, I may only be burning seven buck on the return postage if it turns out to be terrible. I'm not interested in paying more then 30 regardless. I'll re-post detailed pics later on if I end up purchasing it. Again I appreciate your opinions.

Personally, I would pass on this one as well. If the seller is motivated, he would take better quality photos and post more of them. There will always be another razor on the bay that will catch your eye. For example, I contacted a seller who also only had 2 photos of a razor, I emailed him and asked for more photos, he emailed me back said he took about 12 more photos, but none came out well. He said he would try again and send me an email. Well that was about a week or so ago and I'm still waiting. Needless to say, I have not and will not bid on his razor. But YMMV.
Why doesn't the taco truck drive around the neighborhood selling tacos & margaritas???

Thanked: 0Alright, I'm staying away from it. I was considering bidding, but someone else just bid on it and according to e-bay 99% of their bids have been with this seller. A dozen of them have been within the last hour (all for this seller) just as the auctions are about to close. I think I'll stick with the classifieds here, and on razor and stone. Thanks again for all your feedback, I really enjoy the integrity and helpfulness of this community.

I thought Anchor was a Wester Bros. thing, never realized M&G sold them also.
Is this why sellers make reserve prices? So they can bid up their own items and not be obligated to pay if no one else bids? Never thought about it before...
