This guy must be insane. No one in their right mind would spend 17 grand on that razor collection even in a good economy. The price should be like 1,750.

I wouldn't spend that (1750) but as others said upthread, those scales are something else and there is a market for them out there that the likes of us are a bit blind to. Judging by the fact that they've now been re-listed, maybe he is over-reaching but…

Here is the exchange that I had with the seller.

    Me:
    Dear billiardcues,

How are you basing the excessive price for this collection. Do you expect
to sell this collection in a so so economy. How many times will you have to relist it?

    Him:
    Dear captjohnarcher,

This is slightly less than we and many other razor collectors have in their exact same group of rare razors. Plus we spent thousands over the years searching for great items in order to be able to offer them to even those who simply sit at their computers and try to buy them cheaply, without investing the incredible amount of time and $ it takes to build a group like this. You obviously haven't given appropriate thought to what you're accusing us of. Can you sell us this exact group for less.
I didn't think so. And BTW - so so economies have absolutely no affect whatsoever on committed collectors.
Our price is more than fair.

that collection is worth maybe $600 give or take, this gentleman is just trying to get an unreasonable profit. Such a drag too.. I'd much rather have a collection in the hands of one of our members..

I sure that collection of razors have some that have some value, it just too bad the seller seems to think the value is mostly due to the scales. If I recall, there was a member not too long ago selling his entire collection of razors here in the classifieds to the tune of $21,000, at least he had some very sought after razors and customs. For all we know, these could be POS blades with unique scales, but I don't think I want to gamble to find out...that and I don't have a spare 17 grand laying around in my RAD budget.

I was just reading about the Endowment Effect.

This seems to be a good example.

Just another exchange with the seller.

    Me:

    Dear billiardcues,

For all I know, there could be a bunch a junk blades with pretty scales on them. I have amassed quite a collection myself in the tune of 40 plus and I have probably spent no more than a thousand on them. Yes, unique scales adds value to a razor but the value is more in the blade itself, age, style of grind, manufacturer, and et cetera. I have razors that are in pristine condition that date back to the reign of Queen Victoria. It is a shame that serious collectors and users of straight razors cannot share in this lot.

    Him:

    Dear captjohnarcher,

I'm trying to find time to take photos of each razor separately, as they should be shown. If I get it done I'll post them on ebay. These are the cream of the crop examples from three decades of watching for and trading razors, of which we had a little over 1,200. I realize that blades mean a lot to some collectors, but we mostly focused on the most interesting and most difficult to find patterns. And just in case you're not aware of it, the shotgun razor is worth three times this average, and the Indian-WITHOUT-THE SWAZTIKA - twice the average. Funny, here we are, trying to give newer razor collectors a wonderful and very rare opportunity to purchase 38 excellent pieces, without forcing them take a ton of near worthless ones, and at prices we paid for them ourselves more than 15 years ago, when we QUIT collecting, and throw in a very nice case, and we get an email like this.
