Yeah. Well, he does have a fine collection of historical razors, it seems, but at those prices, it's no wonder they never sold in his shop.

As for the first razor, pearl, as George Patton said, is for New Orleans pimps. ;p On the second one, judging by the blade, I suspect that Tiffany maybe made the scales, but even then, they're nothing to write home about.

The prices are way, way inflated, IMHO, especially since the blades are nothing to write home about. But then again, I'd only want the thing to shave with, not to look pretty in a collection.

I love the pearl quote! Even though I would love a pearl inlay in a black horn scale, Robert's surf 'n' turf.

Now on to the blade - have you tried it? Because I think this frameback blade IS something to write home about. I have a 13/16 sans the thumb notch and it gave me a 9 shave with previously irritated skin, from dull to shave-ready with ONE conservative pyramid. It did shave a tad better than my W&B Barber's Use 8/8 (both honed by me). Actually, they probably give equally good shaves, but this one was definitely easier to hone than the W&B

$300 starting bid to write home about? I don't know about that, but to each his own. Especially when you can have a Maestro Livi or a high-end TI or any number of other NOS razors?

I'll be curious to see if they sell. I could certainly be wrong.

    Keith,

the prices are ridiculous, of course! At least for me...

I just meant that the blade itself is superb. I bought mine for $13, + 3 shipping The W&B, on the other hand, was 110 and was a deal for such a blade and scales.

For the scales / Tif name, it 'might' be worth $100... imo... not that I like them so much

    Cheers

Default Ridiculous pricing? Yes! But what did Barnum say...

In the imortal word of P.T. Barnum, there is a sucker born every minute. I have been bopping around eBay for the past few years and am continually amazed at the number of poeple that pay ludicrous prices for things that look pretty but are not that great if you have any clue about the actualy functionality of the piece.

I guess there are a lot of folks out there with more money than brains.

Ivo does have a point, though, that there are probably people who aren't straight razor shavers or collectors who will bid on it just because it's a Tiffany, or it's sterling, or it's pearl, or whatever.

For $13, the blade /would/ be something to write home about.

The mother of pearl price seems a little steep, but not by much. Carved mother of pearl is only a little more common than carved pearl. From a shavers standpoint, maybe it's not worth it, but to a collector that doesn't have a pearl razor, it's probably worth the price.

The sterling, with Tif hallmark, matched pair in good condition with the box, the price is a bit high, but again not by much. These prices are clearly for collectors, not shavers. A premium may be added due to the Tif hallmark.

FWIW, Coca Cola made some advertising DE blades back in the day. A couple blades can go for $100 or more, even used. To DE shavers, they are merely a novelty, but to a Coke collector, they are a great prize. Same with that Titanic razor that sold on ebay a bit ago? Very big for the titanic fan, not so much for a daily use straight shaver.
