Thanked: 3Help: Is This a Good Deal?
Hey all,
I was just looking at Ebay (something I've been doing too much of lately, I'm going to run out of money before I know it ) and I came across this intriguing straight razor deal.
Short story: I just started DE shaving about two weeks ago, but am definitely interested in trying straight shaving in the future.
So what do you think about this kit?: Beginner Set Lot Vintage Torrey Shave Ready Straight Razors x2; Strop;Brush;Soap | eBay
If it's a great deal and you want to scoop it up, that's fine by me. Rather pass on a good offer to you lot than secretly buy it and be shafted by bad equipment.
In the SRP beginner guide it says Torrey is a good brand. Do you know anything about the strop? The soap and brush aren't important- I have an adequate brush and a selection of soap from my DE shaving.
Thanks guys.

Thanked: 334I'd give it serious consideration. It is not considered a good idea to post such auctions here, however. I myself will not be bidding on this, so don't worry about me sniping you. You have my word as a fellow SRP member

Thanked: 3I realize some people might be interested and that's fine...like I said I'd rather get some info and that would be beneficial for me. I'm perfectly happy with DE shaving at the moment and I just wondered if something like this would be worth consideration. I'm sure there will be similar sorts of deals in the future that I can keep to myself

Thanked: 334Esy:
The more I think about it, the more I think it might be a money pit. I figure it this way:
$100 ~ $140 for the kit, including shipping
$40 for honing ($20 per razor, + shipping)
No real good pix of the hone, so who knows what you're really getting
The razors and scales need a good cleaning as evidenced by the brown junk inside the scales seen in photo #7 (shoing razors closed). Being the cautious guy I am, I now think I would pass on it as I know NOTHING about this seller. I apologize if I got your hopes up. That being said, if Lynn or gssixgun chimes in and offers a different opinion, I would follow their recommendation as they are far more knowledgeable than I.
Good luck, and please let us fellow members know what comes of it!

Thanked: 3Well, it's not supposed to come with a hone. It's supposed to come with a strop. And I think the strop is what the razors are pictured on.
Now that I look at it though, Torrey razors are starting at $10 or so for ones that look like they're in nice condition. Maybe it's not such a great deal. Probably what attracted me was that the razors were already honed and a strop came with it.
Is there any sort of SRP straight razor auction buying tips threads or something?
