    Default Norton Madness

First of all, this is my hone on ebay. I'm not trying to promote it here, just thought you guys would be interested to see this.
eBay Australia: Buy new & used fashion, electronics & home d
Its a Norton 2 sided barber hone I found at a garage sale recently.
When I saw it I knew I had seen them before on ebay going for pretty big dollars, but more importantly I knew I had read that they are a great hone.
I did some searching when I got home and found a thread where Sham said they improved the edge of an Escher.
Then i did some more research and became aware that the Australian Competition Axe-men have a passion for these particular hone, and that they fetched unbelievable prices.
Thats when I started loosing sleep about what to do, I badly wanted the hone for my personal use, but one went on ebay for over $1000 last week.
With a market like that I felt I had to put it up on the Bay.
I mean, at the price its on right now I can get myself a Norton 4/8, a Naniwa 12,000 some other stuff from SRD and still have $800 bucks in my pocket

Its blokes like this that are bidding on it though, so I'm not going to call them crazy

What did you think about the hone when sharpening razors?

I shaved with 2 razors that had what I consider a very nice edge on them, after that I gave them both 5 laps on the Norton with lather and there was a definite improvement.
I dont have a lot of experience with different finishers, so I'm not very good at evaluating, but it seemed to add sharpness while keeping smoothness.

That is insane. I recently sold a large 2 sided coticule which I found at a garage sale.
Your score is an order of magnitude bigger than that

great looking hone, and IMOH you should not regret selling it.

Today for 1k$. In 10 years, it will be 2k or 5k. And you could be using it for another 10 years... I would keep it. It's a collectible. Its price will never drop. The buyer might spend a lot of money but he will have a profit should he choose to sell it in a few years. And, I would never ever spend more than 100€ on a hone. Maybe if it comes with a car. A nice car.

Wow...It sure does not look all that special, but I know practically nothing of them.

I would suggest that you are doing the right thing. You are passing it to someone that respects it greatly and obviously really wants it, and turning yourself a handy profit.

Further, you never know...someone might develop some super-duper synthetic that all the champions will use next year, and it might go down in price? Either way, you are bettering yourself and helping someone else presumably do the same.

FWIW, I compete in similar competitions...except we use knives instead of axes. Oddly, most competitors use rather mundane sharpening equipment and constantly demonstrate the importance of technique (sharp is important, but a distant second to technique).
