Hey guys, check out my latest purchase,
This one is really hollow! ;)
Oh, and the seller was kind enough to leave me some buffing compound (rouge I believe) on the blade!

Just incase you are thinking "the temper is blown" you are correct!! I have never seen a razor so floppy, its like a piece of paper! :)
lets see the rest of the razor !!
Its funny, the blade wasnt overpolished, it looked to be in ok condition but the scales were so mint.. I have the exact same one in 8/8 in good shape aswell that hasnt been buffed.
I didnt take any more pics and the wife is on the way to the post office with it right now.
I wrote them an email saying some thing like "you are a knife shop, you know that a blade with a blown temper is useless"
And I got back "Ya we polished it with semi chrome, return it for a full refund"
So they buffed it, burned it and then buffed out the burn :)
That takes some kind of balls to knowingly try and sluff something like that off on a customer.
Bob
I agree Bob, I feel I should post the sellers name, but I know we have rules about that. Also It was listed as 9/8, before he shipped it I specifically asked if it was 1 1/8" and he said yes, it was only just 17/16.
Ill bet he relists it.. Then Ill be forced to let people know about this shady character.
The toe of the blade was floppy like a piece of paper, I could have bent it 90 degrees with very little effort. I didnt bent it further for fear of it breaking, but it was SOFT!
Huh. I can't tell from the photo. Yikes.
Yeah, blatantly doing that to cover up they're mistake. Sounds like they don't know what they're doing. Definately wouldn't want a knife from there either! :( Glad they didn't put up a fight on the refund though.
That's just not right, what's the policy on naming and shaming sellers? is it ok to do it via PM? lol
Wow, what a shame. Glad you were able to get your money back!
Shiny sells higher on eBay. There are a lot of sellers that don't know anything about razors buffing away and passing them off on unsuspecting customers.
Caveat emptor and whatnot...
Ok, here is the razor I bought with the ruined temper....
I wouldnt have shared this link with our no vendor bashing, but I feel its necessary to bend the rules a bit this time (sorry mods)
Nwknives on ebay, home of the ruined temper razors
Check out this item I found on eBay:
End time: Mar 13, 2013 4:53:52 PM
Item: WADE & BUTCHER, FOR BARBERS USE, LARGE BARBER 1 1/8” DEEP RAZOR
URL: http://pages.ebay.com/link/?nav=item...d=111025998466
Alt URL: http://www.ebay.com/itm/WADE-BUTCHER...-/111025998466
Ps: if they hadnt relisted it, I wouldnt have have posted.
Eric
Any chance you have a better pic of the floppy toe? Very interested.
Sorry I dont, thinking back I should have made a video of it. Its like a popcan, it even makes the popping sound when you push it back and fourth.
Most importantly, they admitted it was their fault and re listed
JMHO here gents,,,
But looking closely at the spine and the heel on the e-bay pics, I believe that the issue was a re-grind and not buffing...
Attachment 123570
Both of these areas look very Un-WadenButcherish (yep that is a word)
Anyway that is just what I think, doesn't mean I am right, and that doesn't change the fact that it was overdone...
Mod Note: Moved to the Auction Forum where we can discuss problem/issue plagued razors on the Bay :)
Shame Shame Shame!!!!! I thinks its good you posted it, it would be absurd if an SRP member got burned the same way you did when you had an opportunity to prevent it. IMO there should be an ebay scammmer alert on the top of the homepage, would save alot of brothers cash and heart ache over known offenders. Hope the mods left the warning float considering the nature of your transaction. The seller should have at least mentioned the compromised condition of the steel.
EDIT: +1 on what Glen said, the spine is all wrong, nope it aint just 'weird' hone ware!
SOMEONE contact Merriam-Webster and get them to include: "Un-WadenButcherish"!!!
Gentlemen, There is no rule about pointing out flaws with the RAZOR, and why that RAZOR, might be bad
There is however a fine line when you start busting on the Vendor, who may or may not know anything about the razor even an Ebay vendor..
If you keep crossing that line and then explaning what the Mods should and shouldn't do, you will only get the entire thread pulled, which helps no one
That is the only warning, I am trying really hard not to have to yank the thread here Gents
Glen Senior Mod SRP
Glen, I have a couple of regrinds under my belt now and I must say, I believe it would have been impossible to finish a regrind from any stage of the job with such flop. JMO.
Edited for forum rules ;)
Was the rust and pitting in the pic I posted still on the blade ????
The razor did have the rust, yes, but like all my other razors that have been carefully buffed with rouge only..
Anywho, case closed I guess, buyer beware everyone.
Cheers.
Eric
I have bought from this vendor before, and I was very pleased with my razor I got from him!
argh I wanna get in on this thread but I'm scared i'll break the rules
I messaged the seller asking why he would relist, he said "it is what it is, thats why it is only listed in excellent condition and not higher"
Notice there are no returns on the sale this time.
He did add this:
On Mar-08-13 at 10:57:13 PST, seller added the following information:
The temper is ruined on this razor and that is why the condition is rated only excellent++ overall.
As to why it would still be in "excellent++" condition with a ruined temper is beyond me though.
Excellent condition.
Thats so sleezzy. This is why i prefer to hunt for my razors.
I must admit the scales were so nice I contemplated asking to purchase them seperately and scrap the razor, but I paid 30$ in import fees so it would be a lose lose.
Im happy he owned up to the temper issue.
I am just going to add ... Not everybody who buys straight razors acquires them to shave with.
If you are a collector only, the razor is in good condition for that purpose only.
I want to add I personally would never class a razor that couldn't shave perfectly as "excellent condition" (or any condition at all lol), but I do want them to work for a different purpose.
It was poor business ethics to omit the defects of the razor. Cases like this annoy me, because it gives the impression that a lot of sellers sell crap on the bay :(
Not all sellers are bad on eBay!
What do you think on that point?
Caveat Emptor: the commercial principle that the buyer is responsible for making sure that goods bought are of a reasonable quality, unless the seller is offering a guarantee of their quality. Stinks, but it's out there. Now I'm worried about the used razors I've purchased. Is there any such thing as a temper tester? Thank you epd for the heads up!!
I don't know "conditions" for antiques. What is better than "excellent"?
