Thread: To Clean or not to clean!? that is the question!

I've bought quite a few razors at auction, do people prefer to have them all cleaned up or slightly tarnished showing some signs of age?

depends on if its patina or rust ..... and if your keeping them or just in it to sell them ...

can you post some pics of what you have aquired ??

I guess for your own personal use it's up to your own preferance.

If someone is an experienced and skilled restorer of razors I have no objection to them 'cleaning it up.' If someone is not skilled and experienced I'd rather they leave well enough alone. Just IMHO.

Are you a straight razor shaver or just doing market research to resell the razors you bought at auction ?

I've just stated using the cut throats for shaving (with several minor bloody mishaps!) its only after picking up a couple in a job lot at an auction that I tried it. I've collected a few more including a days of the week set which is in dire need of some TLC!

I suppose i am looking into some market research but I don't want to abuse peoples knowledge on here just to make a bit of money. I've got a genuine interest in straight razors and coming from the UK i see quite a few around the place . I'm going to have to go to Sheffield someday the place must be crawling with them!

ive attached some pics of the Severn day set. they are George Butler (Sheffield made) with an image of Shakespeare on the blade. These will probably be the keepers for me! ive got some other butler's, kropps, and some solingen which I will be looking to sell i the future.

We welcome new people to this board for the purpose of furthering the sport of straight razor shaving and their experience with it. So on that basis, welcome to SRP. We do have rules prohibiting sales on the forum. You can familiarize yourself with those here. Check out the SRP library beginner's guide for tips on shaving, honing, restoring and more, and of course the forum threads are very informative. Nice set you have there. Once honed up I'm sure they will be great shavers.
