Thanks for all the info guys

Cut of the day? Brilliant! I'll have a look

As for that list of advice above (thanks Brenngun) I was planning on taking most of it. I won't have a chance to get a pro hone on my first blade before it arrives, though. It's already sent. I am looking around for a 2nd and, if I find one, I hope it'll already be honed or if not I'll consider first shipping it to a hone-ster before receiving it where I am.

Once you get the hang of it you won't mind shaving for 20-40 min... and then you got a good reason to get a faster bike!

It may convince you this is not your gig. I looked once. I was careful before but I'm 10x more conscientious now. And that's all I have to say about that.

Cut of the day is very scary but also gave me my biggest laugh. There is a guy on there that cut his nose going in to shave his mustache. I never laughed so hard in my life. I can now see how easy it would be to do though....

Obviously I'm new here and know precious little about the razor world. I'm also in a quandry: 1) I hate shaving, 2) wife hates it when I don't, 3) I love sharp stuff. Anyone else like this? So, here I am now registered at SRP and I've got my first used vintage razor on its way: a CV Heljestrand Elskiltuna MK 31 bought from eBay, which I was told had a decent blade and fine scales and a reaonable but not bargain price in this case.

I don't have any of these badger brushes or fancy soaps. No. It's usually been normal soap (nice normal soap; no foam stuff) and Gillettes. (Is the G-name banned here?) I've also always counted on getting it all done in around 60 secs or less, and then motorcycling off to work. Please don't tell me that straight shaving will screw up this routine.

I know care and sharpening are important if you're a razor guy, and I think I should be fine give a bit of learning. While it's different, I have and maintain a whole lot of pricey kitchen knifes and I'm already set with sharpening paraphenalia - several Japanese naturals and synthetics. In fact, I'm looking forward to using my Jnats in new ways. My first razor, apparently, won't arrive 'shave ready'.

Two final things - I just posted a thread in the 'Japan' forum asking for a 1-shop Tokyo/Kanto recommendation if anyone could help. Also, I have a few connections to Barcelona and so Filarmonica really appeals to me. Would appreciate any help in landing a Fil as a second razor, though I'm unwilling to pay some of the higher prices around.

    Cheers, Ger
Nothing's banned that works for you. The department store fare didn't work for me, which is why I hated to shave, and the old time stuff does, which is why I love to shave now. My conversion was a practical matter first, nostalgic second.

Welcome. I think you're in for a treat if your experience is anything close to mine!

Excellent point, and just the sort of logic to get me in more trouble!

Had a look at the Cut of the Day and, as expected, yes, plenty of gore! Saw the sliced nose too. Fortunately, no gushing arteries though.

I wasn't put off. Seriously, in the world of ultra-sharp kitchen knives you see worse - lots of hacked off finger bits, discarded nails and macheted knuckles. I believe, when compared to you patient shavers, that the need for speed is partly to blame.

Right. When I finally get my soon-to-arrive razor 'shave ready' or at least as much as I can tell then I will time myself on my first go and document any blood loss. Still think I'll be faster than most of you. 20 mins tops?
