Thread: New Guy Needs Advice

Hello All.

I just got a DE razor last week and can't believe I was in the dark so long about wet shaving.

I want to try a straight razor. I found this

I have nerve damage in my left hand so I have to shave with my right hand mostly. I like Damascus, so if I have trouble with a straight razor, at least I will like the looks of it. But, I'd like an opinion from you knowledgable folks as to whether this could ever be a good razor.

Looking for your first straight razor you have many choices, you might try the classifieds area, or the vendors area, or the advertisers who sponsor advertisements the site.

My advice is to take some time before taking the leap, it's worth it.

To put it plainly...that's not a good razor. Look for a razor such as a Dovo from a reputable dealer that sells them shave ready to get a proper start.

Never buy from a place that sells a complete new kit for 40 bucks. Your gonna get what you pay for when it comes to razors and cheap is not the best way to go if you want to have a nice experience. The one exception would be whipped dog's razors. I never bought one but I hear you may get something ugly but it will shave. Read, learn, choose wisely.

I paid over $100 and was told it was shave ready, but it wasn't, really shave ready will be honed by an expert before you get it. Check classifids and SRD (Lynn hones them)

I'm relatively new to straight razor shaving, but I have an interest in knives and other steel cutting tools - and one thing I do know is that decent Damascus steel is very expensive!

There are plenty of cheap factory-made "Damascus" razors, knives, etc out there - and they're junk. Using them to make iron filings is about all they're fit for.
