Alum, how should it be used; what is its purpose

I've got a block of alum and am wondering what to do with it. When should it be used, before or after shaving? Is it an astringent or a face toner? What does it do to benefit a shaving experience? Thanks.

To stop the bleeding. If you have sensitive skin, DON'T use it as a toner.

I use mine as an Aftershave treatment. The results are similar to using and alcohol based aftershave, skin tightening and cooling effect, just without as much sting or any scent. After that I usually finish with a moisturizer and scent.

Don't confuse an alum block with a septic stick. The septic stick is alum based but has other things to stop bleeding the alum block will not stop bleeding. I always use the block after shaving. It tones the face and closes the pores. If you have alot of razor burn don't use the alum block it will burn like you know what.

I hope you're not rubbing septic on your face I can think of plenty of aftershaves that smell better than this

It does for me. It might be different from a sceptic stick (I've never used one) but it does help coagulate the blood.

After shaving and washing off remaining lather, apply cold water and lightly rub the alum block all over the shaved area of your wet face (you could just wet the block if you want too). You can then wet your palms with more cold water and rub your face to distribute the alum evenly. Following this you should rinse your face, towel dry then apply your favorite aftershave. Don't forget to dry off your alum block before storing it.

The alum is a mild astringent and face toner. You will sense this with your wetted palms while rubbing your face after applying the alum. It helps close the pores and minor nicks. It also relieves minor irritation from razor burn.
