Practice
I did my first semi wet shave last night. I call it semi because I have not yet gotten my razor from Whipped dog. I bought the cheap brush and soap set from Rite Aid, used that with my mach3 (that I'm eager to retire). The lather wasnt as thick as I'd hoped for, but after watching one of Lynns videos, I realized I was using too much water.
So tonight, I had another practice session lathering, and I "shaved" with a butterknife. The lather was much thicker this time, not bad for a boars hair brush. I used the butterknife to practice the blade angle, and to try to get the feel for holding and using a straight.
Am I getting a little cuckoo, or is the butterknife a good practice toll?
I will let the good folks on this site be the judge.

Might be good if you're going to use a Japanese style straight (non folding). Not sure how beneficial for a folding, since holding it is a huge part. Good luck, and be patient.

I think you may have a point there. I will be getting a folding razor, but blade angle should be the same, right?

Not really. I have half a dozen razors, each has their own sweet spot. It will be close anyhow.
Practice dual handed.
