Thanked: 0New to Straight Razors
Hello everyone!
I recently decided I'd like to look into straight razors and start learning the art of shaving.
Can anyone recommend a good, budget friendly starting razor and tell me what else I will need to get started?
My budget for the razor and necessities will be around $50-60, my cousin has a strop hanging in the bathroom, so I won't need my own yet.
Thank you in advance and looking forward to my first shave!

Thanked: 1263Welcome to SRP! Check out the classifieds section, there's usually something kicking about in the price range you're looking for, and you can usually be assured the blade will be shave ready. Something else you'll need besides a strop is a decent brush and cream or soap...you can usually pick something up on the cheap at your local drugstore that'll get you by until you're sure you'll enjoy this sport
Also, let us know where you're from..maybe a member close by that can help you on your journey.

Thanked: 0Ah, didn't see the classifieds. Thank you, hoping to have one by next week, can't wait to replace my cartridge razor.
I'll have to edit my info too, but I live in Quincy, MA.

I started with a DOVO 5/8th - great razor.
You might think of buying a starter kit, comes with brush, strop, soap, soap dish, brush stand, styptic pencil, and some oil along with the razor, which in my case was the DOVO.
Very happy, I believe you can get such a kit here at SRP....
Cheers!

Thanked: 57Dovo 6/8", half-hollow, round tip. The bigger blade is easier to control on the strop and on the face.

You're getting good advice here already. One thing I would add. Avoid using your cousins strop. Even if he says it's OK you're likely to put some nicks in it while your learning and that could cause problems for him. Look for one of your own. You'll both be happier no matter what happens.
