Thanked: 3Finally...
Hey Fellas,
Well, it finally happened, I finally achieved a comfortable, smooth-as-a-baby's-bottom shave with a straight razor!
I have to admit, in the last couple of months I have had blasphemous thoughts about returning to the Fusion, which I have used for some years with water only, which has achieved adequate, even surprisingly good shaves in the pastwith no razor burn or cuts. I know some of you have had similar thoughts. (Admit it) My fiance has encountered me standing over the sink with blood dripping down my upper lip to my chin, swearing that if I would give up the "stupid straight razor" that she would buy me a year's worth of Fusion Blades.....But i stuck to it, searching for the holy grail! I;m a man, dammit, not a consumer....
My face has various challenges: bumps and skin tags and little colorless moles that seem just perfect to catch with a beautifully sharp piece of steel. I was able to gently stroke with just a whisper of the razor tonight, thanks to the expert sharpening job that Chris Ellison did for me on the Frederick's Celebrated sheffield (new favorite!) (thanks Chris!)
Minimal nicks, smooth face and an almost complete lack of razor burn and blood...Very Happy
This is my plug to encourage fellow beginners to try out the expert honing services of some of our mentors here. I seriously doubt you will be discouraged! Just remember that when you have a truly sharp razor, minimal pressure is your friend......
Thanks to Lynn, Chris Ellison, and for all the other senior members here for offering up all the good advice and guidance...I am back to believer status..

Thanked: 1184I keep the 15 wrappers from my first styptic pencils and alum blocks in a display case as a reminder of the bloody trials of beginning. Just kidding. It sounds like your over the hump or tag so to speak. :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Shave ready = Success ready.
Keep your concentration high and your angles low!
Despite the high cost of living, it's still very popular.

Good for you sticking with it, and just a point of note, even if you do find yourself needing someting other than a straight, I would seriously consider a DE if you don't have one. For me, the best has been ther Merkur 47C with Derby blades. This changes from person to person, but I would never head back to a fusion or any other fixed multi blade razor. YMMV
