Thanked: 2What type of scales to choose? Wood or plastic?
I want to buy another straight razor, and I can choose one with the typical rounded classical plastic black handle (the one you see on most razors) or I can choose a black wooden one, which has more straight corners. Similar like the picture attached.
Which type of handle should be better and why? The wooden one has the same shape as this one shown in the link, but its plain black - not marbled/wallnut. Just black wood.

Thanked: 13245More importantly then the shape of the scales is the quality of the steel, is this a TI that you are looking at ????

Thanked: 1263Exactly as Glen asked, what brand of razor is it you're looking to purchase?

Thanked: 2Its an unknown Taiwanese brand, but I have exactly the same blade already. Its shaves fine, so I am happy with that... as I don't care what brand it is.. as long as it shaves nicely. It does, shaves as nice as my Edwin Jagger DE89, I know... that's a DE razor, not sure if that's good to compare with a straight razor. Anyways, I am happy with it. So now I am doubting to which scales to pick for the other one, hence my query I know the blade will be fine. I guess its purely a matter of personal choice what scales to pick. But I wondered as most razors have the same shape scales, (rounded) if there is particular good reason for that?

Thanked: 2Sorry, I already found a good tread, guess I will pick the plastic ones.
Are wood handles a good option for the straight razor? - Page 2

Thanked: 1184Flip a coin on the scales. It really depends on who makes them for you. But it sounds like plastic on a Taiwan razor is a good match. :<0)
Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Not sure if it is necessary, but ren waxing wood scales makes me more comfortable using them. To protect them, especially the pivot area, from moisture. I've got a few in wood and so far so good.

If they are both of equal quality it will make no difference.
Keep your concentration high and your angles low!
Despite the high cost of living, it's still very popular.

I personally would go for that one in the pic! beautiful...
I have rescaled in Cocobolo and Cascara, and have had no issues with warping or rust.
I would say, if you're not going for aesthetics, it makes sense to go with plastic, since black is black, and there is less chance of something going wrong with the plastic.
