New Video by Lynn: Honing-Refreshing
This video was new to me and reflects my thoughts
on refreshing a razor exceptionally well. Highly recommended
video to watch. Especially the CrOx on the inside back of the fabric
half of a modern strop (any 0.5 micron abrasive, diamond, CBN,
CrOx).

Straight Razor Honing-Refreshing Straight Razors
In a nutshell a modern water stone hone in the range of 8k-16k is all the hone that a "shaver" needs
to keep his razor sharp and ready to go after it has been correctly honed. And with
the use of paste on the inside canvas it is possible to postpone the need of a hone
for those that get their razor professionally honed at the beginning.
This lowers the bar for equipment i.e. hones that are needed by a
beginner for the first year is now one hone or less.
My addition to this choice list would be 0.3micron film as used in the Pinnacle honing system
sold by Woodcraft (If it is still available). Least expensive choice.
Highly recommended:
Naniwa Super Stone 12000 grit in stand... (best value).
or
Shapton Glass Stone 16000 grit. (not better than sex but some might argue).
Never to be ignored is the Norton 4k/8k combo
hone. A true work horse and classic.
Well demonstrated is the modular paddle strop system.
Worth giving a good look....

Thank you niftyshaving, I swear all you have to do is think about something and within a day it shows up somewhere where you can see and/or use it. A couple of days ago I realized I needed to really refresh a couple of razors my mentor had honed beautifully for me because definitely one of them was not up to par anymore and it had been about three months. I have an old barbers hone but I was curious about CoX and the like. And lo and behold, here's Lynn's video you put up. Clear, concise, alternatives given and discussed. I have a good Russian Shell strop that I don't want to do the CoX to but I do have a (Name omitted out of courtesy) strop that I can use the white side on. I like bench strops and don't have space in by bathroom for one, so what I've done is cut some 3/8 particle board to width and almost as long as the strop and inserted it between the two and held together with velcro straps top and bottom. Can do to the nameless strop with the Cox and get on with the pursuit of the perfect shave (if I ever reach that point I'll have to grow my full beard back).

Thanked: 2This video is one of the best that Ive seen Lynn put together so far. As a newbie who dulled the razor learning to strop I found this video and it's techniquesParamount in refreshing the edge to obtain close comfortable shaves one again. Without it I might have been discouraged worth the Str8 razor. .. Thanks Lynn and thanks to all of the other members here who share this invaluable information with all of us.

Thanked: 3After doing alot of reading, forum surfing video watching... I came up with my plan to inch into honing, by getting my first touch up hone and do a pasted strop or balsa... So I read and read, deciding to go with the Naniwa 12k based on alot of other more experienced people on this forum... Then decided on .25 micron diamond paste or .5 crox paste.... Then at some point later in the year get a Norton set of 200/1k, 4k/8k.....
Oh then I saw this video and realized that I was asking the search bar the wrong questions...LOL.. Lynn did all the work for me...
Thanks again.. great info !
