Getting the angle right is not much more than starting with the spine close to the skin and then raising it until the blade cuts whiskers. As you'll learn with practice, there is a sweet spot between cutting nothing and raising the spine too far. You'll know when you've raised the spine too far because your skin will be quick to inform you of this fact.
