is there any way to "fix" a kriegar straight razor? actually make the blade keep a hone for longer than a shave?

Thanked: 983I'm thinking bad steel is just bad steel. I don't know anything about Krieger razors though.

Thanked: 13245They are what we call RSO "Razor Shaped Objects..
To answer all your questions in all your threads
No...
They will never hold a real edge
They are made as knives so the Geometry is also off
The steel is just not there
The Handle is made as a knife handle and is useless as a razor handle (scales) even if you could change the blade they would never work right..
Use it as a display, put it up in a box on the wall and get a Real Straight Razor if you want to shave with one...
ps: Do NOT be afraid to ask and to link a razor here on SRP BEFORE you buy one, there are many shall we say less then "Honest" sellers out there taking advantage of newbs with words like "Shave Ready"...Last edited by gssixgun; 09-26-2013 at 10:24 PM.

Oh don't believe them.
There is a guaranteed way to treat them. Just put it in a vice and give it one good whack with a five pound sledge. That's just what it needs. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 983Well it looks like your friend got gyped in this kind hearted gift to you. Learn from it both of you, and move on. Take the advice given, and research before your next purchase. Run it by the blokes here first, before you spend, and they will guide you in the right direction. You'll know when you've hit on something good, because they stop being smart alec's and start praising you by offering to take care of the razor for you for as long as possible, or telling you it's not worthy of you and that they will take it off your hands for you etc.
Take heart and don't give up.

Thanked: 1184We need a warning that comes up on Google as a first line when you type in anything that has to do with straight razors. A link right to the list of razors to avoid. hmmmmm how can we hack that into Goggles servers ? It's just a matter of hits :<0)
Sorry about the Krieger bud. I was just given 1 from a friend. I told him I would put it in my collection :<0)
It has a nice spot right next to my other letter openers and box knives.Good judgment comes from experience, and experience....well that comes from poor judgment.

Thanked: 10I feel your pain! Actually, no I don't, because that is one of the brands I was warned away from. However, my straight razor sensei, I guess you could call him, is messing with one right now in between projects like fixing up my Dovo (Dude, hurry up already!) and making a seven day set of totally modified Chinese razors. I am just a newb but I was amazed at the weight of the scales on that kreigar, they are rigid like a knife handle. Swing weight LOL! Then he pointed out something after he popped the scales off. The spine of the blade is like really thin. The blade is like kinda wide. I was like, "So?" and he explained the math and geometry of the straight razor, did some calculations, and declared that even if the steel is okay, that razor can never be honed. The bevel angle is too pointy. The edge will just topple. You see, it is like ALL about the bevel. Well, and the steel of course. He showed me that he would have to grind it down to a little over a half inch wide, or 4/8 in razor lingo, to have a bevel angle in the usable zone. I remembered all the 4/8 razors (he has two small buckets full of old straight razors!) that he showed me and said were potentially excellent shavers, and I said, "well, so why dontcha?" He thought about it for a minute and then took it to the belt sander! He let me do some of the grinding and that was cool. Speaking of cool, we did more time cooling than grinding. The blade is presumably already heat hardened and tempered (two different things but both have to be done) so we couldn't let it get too hot. He says very likely even with perfect geometry it won't be much of a razor, but he wants to see anyhow, just so he can speak from experience instead of just urban legend and half baked attempts to get one shave ready. I got my fingers crossed since it was my idea but well I also cross my fingers when I buy my powerball or my mega millions ticket LOL! I just couldn't get over those scales. Solid steel with small wood inlays! They would have looked good on a pocketknife. Seriously it was probably over a half pound. A year ago I would have been like, "Doooooood, that is KEWL!" But now I have seen the light. Anyway I will report back when he is finished honing it or trying to hone it. Oh... he says I got to be the one to shave with it. Think I'm skeered? Nah. Well, maybe a little.
