Paddle strop and a few straights is all you really need apart from a brush and soap. I like to rest the edge so take at least 3 straights with me. Paddlestrop with CBN on one side and plain leather on the other keeps me shaving for a looooong time.

Can't take it on an airplane so they have to go in checked bags. I bring a DE when I travel. I'm always afraid the razor will get stolen. If the DE disappears, i won't be as upset.

Congradulations on the newest addition to your family.

You could always mail the razor (especially if you have multiple) and some of the gear a few days before you head out especially if you know the people (as you do in this case). If you are going to be staying at a hotel during your stay try calling in advance and see if you can mail a package to yourself there and if they'll hold it for you.

I personally don't travel much but I have recently gotten a DE razor on the off chances that I'll need to (and also for times when I need a quick shave) since there is no way I'll be able to go back to using cartridges after spoiling myself with a SR.

I don't see the problem. You might want a cheaper strop for travel. Don't roll it up. Stick one leg of a pair of jeans inside-out down into the other and stick your strop down there. A paddle strop or loom strop might be more convenient. Lets see... a cheap Chinese black badger brush that you won't cry over if it gets lost, a couple of expendable razors like maybe Gold Dollar conversions or Whipped Dog razors, a mug from the thrift store, VDH soap, and basically you have a kit that you can afford to lose. Be sure to have a few shaves with your travel razors ahead of time to make sure they will perform okay. Toothbrush cases make good razor coffins, yeah. A pill bottle or a short piece of PVC pipe with end caps can work for a brush case. Drill ventilation holes if you like. Don't let brush moisture get on your razors though! Stainless razors might be a good option. I notice SRD has an all stainless Dovo.

Congrats! A great reason to miss a few SR shaves.
