Thread: missing my straights...

been traveling for a week to greet a new granddaughter.

I loved greeting her, clearly a gift from God, but miss using my SRs while traveling. Have been using cartridge razors.

Any tips for traveling with SR gear?

There was a thread here a week or two ago that included pics that gave me some great ideas.
Pack the razor in a toothbrush holder (round plastic tube). I packed some cotton pads inside the tube to keep the razor from shifting.
Toilet paper tubes are the perfect size to fit around many shaving brushes and helps dry them.
Travel shampoo squeeze bottles are great for aftershave.
I slapped a big snap-link (D-ring) on my hanging strop and hooked it on a towel rack at the hotel.
Just couldn't get the mug figured out so I face-lathered. Working on finding a suitable substitute.

Congratulations! I spend more than six months a year away from home. I often just pack a bag of shaving gear and go. Often I take a pair of Henkels SS razors amongst strops and creams. I got them just because I thought they would be lower maintenance and they are also great shavers. There have been a few posts on the subject. There are several members that travel a lot for work and everyone figures a kit out. Mine isn't that clever, but there are some who have made nice brush carriers etc

Many hotels have coffee makers in the rooms these days...re-purpose one of the coffee mugs

Paddle strop and a few straights is all you really need apart from a brush and soap. I like to rest the edge so take at least 3 straights with me. Paddlestrop with CBN on one side and plain leather on the other keeps me shaving for a looooong time.

Can't take it on an airplane so they have to go in checked bags. I bring a DE when I travel. I'm always afraid the razor will get stolen. If the DE disappears, i won't be as upset.

You could always mail the razor (especially if you have multiple) and some of the gear a few days before you head out especially if you know the people (as you do in this case). If you are going to be staying at a hotel during your stay try calling in advance and see if you can mail a package to yourself there and if they'll hold it for you.

I personally don't travel much but I have recently gotten a DE razor on the off chances that I'll need to (and also for times when I need a quick shave) since there is no way I'll be able to go back to using cartridges after spoiling myself with a SR.

My view exactly. I don't have grand ones yet, but children are truly a gift from God.
