Thanked: 3Rough Morning!
I've only been straight razor shaving for a few weeks now, and considered myself pretty fortunate to have not nicked myself even once....then this morning happened! I nicked myself twice right under my bottom lip. I was trying to get the perfect angle and kept the razor on my face too long. They didn't bleed, but I can see the skin flap and a little irritation. Still enjoyed the shave though! I'm sure it will happen again.

From time to time the Razor Gods must be paid.

Been there, still doing that.
Honestly, if I am feeling a little "off" I try to put of shaving until I am more focused. I usually have most of my blunders when experimenting with a new grip or angle. I had a couple of flaps like you described on a wrinkle( on cheek where dimple used to be). I learned not to approach this wrinkle from the side. This is not really advice, just sharing

No nicks in your first weeks is considered good in my opinion, congrats
Holding the razor against your skin without shaving should be avoided as you probably know. Try to adjust your grip or the razors angle in the air instead even if it might be a bit hard sometimes. But I guess it is easy to make a mistake like that even though you know that you shouldn't do it.

I'm with Hirlau and Ludvig. You will end up looking like you got attacked by a cat a few times, and the theory is much easier than the practice. I earned my stripes on my first shave!
I want a lather whip

Goes with the territory...as Hirlau says, the Razor Gods must be paid, and paid in blood and skin they will be.
A great tip from Lynn, the founder of the site, is when you get a cut / nick, to apply some anti-biotic cream like polysporin, it make it heal much quicker and much cleaner.
Works for me....

Don't forget that your razor loves you and shows this by way of a little 'kiss' occasionally
Hang on and enjoy the ride...

Keep you styptic pencil or stick handy. It used to be that more often than not, if styptic stick was not in reach by the sink where I shaved, the chances of me nicking myself increased exponentially.

Yes, the styptic pencil for the nicks, and the sacred alum block for after the shave....hopefully only the alum block...which is one of the best parts of the shave for me!
