Different properties include things like stability and consistency of the lather, hardness or softness of the soap, how moisturizing the soap is, what vitamins are in the soap, how easily the soap lathers, etc...

If you want to mix something together, why not mix two superior products (such as making an uber lather or re-batching two quality shaving soaps together), instead of mixing (or tainting if you ask me) something superior with something inferior...and let's face it, hand/body soap is an inferior product when using for shaving.

If you read up on soap making a little, you'll come to understand that specific oils are used in shaving soaps because of what they do. Even bentonite clay is used in shaving soaps because of how much "slip" it gives.
Yes you are right, in theory, however we all know that everyone's experience is different. I am not saying.that I would do this as I have too much real shaving product to work through.
However the OP stated that they liked using.thier ivory soap over the VDH, by combining a product the OP liked with a proper shaving soap that they don't get along with, it's possible.that.they will get a best of both worlds thing happening.
I mix all sorts of shaving soaps together, in fact a few weeks ago I had a cella/palmolive soap, macca root/musgo real, and added glycerin thing going on.

Ok. So I tried the ivory soap thing and I'll be damned it was just as good as my sandal wood soap IMO. It had a great lather, smooth cushiony glide, and it didn't dry up. Hey, it brought me back to the late 1800's when I was a kid. jk but it was a really good shave for me. I changed my signature because you read so many opinions that seemed to be based in either speculation or off what someone else says (not directed at anyone in particular). Half the fun for me is just trying things. I tried the ivory soap and liked it. I will continue to use the more expensive shaving soap because everything is better if it costs more right? Lol. But it's good to know FOR ME the ivory soap was actually really good.

I haven't tried to shave with any bath soaps yet. I imagine someday my luggage will get lost and I'll have to try it. I don't want to hijack the thread, but am I the only one who has every discovered at the last minute that they were all out of bath soap and showered with a puck of Williams?

Hahahaha. That's a new twist. Shaving soap as bath soap! Hey. Why not I guess. You never know till you try it and guess what I'll be using in the shower tomorrow?

Actually as the morning goes on it seems my face is drying out from (what I think) is the ivory soap. Maybe not as big of hit as I first thought.

A lot of things CHANGE from the time one starts until the time one gets to be an "old hand" at this game.

The biggest ones are touch and notions of sharpness/comfort. A lot of things that are quite "okay" for starting out, quickly become stepping stones to a higher plane of shaving.

I saponified selected fats (for their lathering qualities, including home-grown tallow) with split salts (NaOH, KOH, for proper softness/durability) and made fine lathering soap. I thought it was great. Shared it with some wet-shaver friends, one liked it (the weekly shaver). The daily shaver didn't, said it wasn't slickery enough. SO i added some bentonite clay (from well drilling) and that made it super dooper.

Bought a cheap puck at the store recently for comparison. I gave that one away. It may have lathered a little easier, but didn't have the staying power of homegrown.

You can lather anything soapy. How well it shaves, is nearly completely subjective to your water, skin, and skills with brush and razor.

Every so often I'll experiment with a high-glycerin bar soap. I used a 365 brand lavender soap last week, it lathered up like a madhouse, had nice glide, good wet feel, lovely aroma. I had 1/3 of a terrific shave…and then it died almost without a trace, on my face and even in the brush.

Give me 5-6 months, I'll pick up another one and try again. In the meantime, I have Mama Bear's Roses shave stick to comfort me.

Well, I thought you guys were nuts with using Ivory soap as a shave soap. Then curiosity took over and I hand lathered some using my cheapo Omega boar brush. Billy be damned, it gives a better lather than modern Williams for me. Brushed some on my cheek and took a few swipes with a vintage Gillette OC DE. Looks and feels like it should work. Softened it a bit in the microwave and pressed it into a left over soap container ready for tomorrow morning shave with the Gillette OC. Who'd have thunk anyway.

For me the verdict on using Ivory soap as a shave soap is in, pending further use of course, http://straightrazorpalace.com/shave...ml#post1299962 .
