Thanked: 0Newb Strop Question
Hey gang! As I said in my intro, I was initially gifted a straight razor set (from the do not use list) and it came with a strop. I believe it was the Van der Hagen setup. Since my girlfriend has upgraded me to a new Dovo 6/8 for my bday and I'll be sending it off to SRD for a proper honing, would any of you recommend NOT experimenting with the strop I have now? Should I just pony up for a decent strop from SRD and, if so, which one is the best balance of price and function for a brand newb?
Thanks for your time, people! Joe

Thanked: 284It's fine to get another but I'd use the one you have, since most likely it'll get nicked. In fact you have an advantage having that one to practice on.
I love living in the past...

Most new guys are recommended a cheap starter strop as they usually end up nicked pretty bad while learning. Nick up the one you have and get a decent one later when you've got stropping down pat
My wife calls me......... Can you just use Ed

Thanked: 0I'm just starting out also, and I'm really glad the answer is so straight forward. I feel a lot less worried than if people were recommending expensive strops for beginners, because I can't afford one even if it was recommended.

Also since you have the razor and strop and plan to sent the razor our for honing why not do a little practicing now before the honing. You do not want to strop it before the first shave once you get it back from honing.
Keep your concentration high and your angles low!
Despite the high cost of living, it's still very popular.

I would practice stropping the other razor since the edge isn't that good. It will help build muscle memory while your other is away being sharpened. Keep it slow and steady. Make sure the spine is always on the strop and practice. It will also help break it in a little bit.

Thanked: 0Thanks a lot for the info gang! I did practice stropping the garbage straight and actually managed to get a good shave... for about one cheek! Really looking forward to Lynn or Don's handiwork - I sent my razor away today. Really appreciate the straight goods from the members here. Cheers!
